Tonight's Game

Kearney Here for Opener

Tonight's football game pits the Fort Hays State Tigers against
the Kearney (Neb.) State College Antelopes in a traditional battle be-
tween the two schools, FHS and Kearney have been locking up in foot-
ball wars since 1926 and fans are always treated to some fine football
action when the two teams come together,

Kearney State comes into the games with two early-season wins.
Coach Allen Zikmund's chargers dropped Eastern Montana 34-14 in their
season opener, then came back last week to bomb the Washburn Univer-
sity Ichabods 55-6. Zikmund used 73 players in an attempt to hold the
score down but the young Antelopes were more than eager to show their
wares to the home folk*

The visiting Antelopes bring to Lewis Field Stadium one of the
most potent offenses in small college football. The Nebraskans are
averaging 383,5 yards per game on the ground and close to 100 yards a
game through the air. The leading ground gainer is junior quarterback
Rich Osentowski who has picked up 198 yards on 24 carries. He has
also completed 7 of 14 passes for 144 yards.

Kearney will bring a big, strong squad into the fray. Coach
Zikmund thinks his squad is still young and maybe a year away from
championship caliber. But with two important wins under their belts,
it looks as if this year's squad could become one of the school's best.

FHS comes into tonight's encounter seeking its first win of the
young season. The Tigers dropped a 27-20 decision to Southwestern
Oklahoma State College last Saturday at Weatherford. The Bulldogs
lived up to preseason expectation and showed themselves a strong,
veteran crew.

FHS, on the other hand, proved it is still reminiscent of the
teams of the past few seasons with a fine second half effort which in-
cluded good defensive work, a potent offensive drive and great desire to
win. Tiger head coach Wayne McConnell, though not entirely satisfied
with his team's performance, said he feels the potential is there for an-
other good Tiger football team.

Leading the charge in the first game was the running of Rich
Dreiling and Ron Goates and the passing of Leo Hayden along with a
fine effort from the defense.

President’s Welcome

A hearty welcome to all of you
who are in attendance for the first
home game of the 1967 football
season, A special welcome to all
parents and to the business and
professional men and women of
Hays who have participated in the
College Appreciation Days, The
fine support of all Fort Hays
State football fans has been a def-
inite factor in the successful sea-
sons we have had in the past.

Our first two non-conference
games are against two of the out-
standing college teams in their re-
spective states. Our team made a
fine showing against Southwest
Oklahoma, I am sure that they
will present fine opposition to our
opponents this evening. These
two games will prepare us for our
strong CIC conference opponents
and will better condition us for the
competition ahead.

We shall miss the names, num-
bers and faces of some of the out-
standing athletes from last year,
but our coaches assure me that we
have another fine squad. You will
soon become acquainted with the
names and numbers of some out-
standing players on this year's
squad.

I hope that each of you will plan
to see the fighting Tigers in action
throughout the season. I am sure
that you will be backing a team of
which all of us can be justly proud.
Plan to come back often for you
are always welcome. We are al-
ways happy to have you attend any
and all of our college activities.

Sincerely yours,

M, C, Cunningham
President

Harriers To Defend Title

Fort Hays State College cross country coach Alex Francis
greeted five returning lettermen and 12 other candidates last week
when practice for the defending CIC champions officially got under
way.

Francis, in his 22nd year as head track and field coach and his
12th year as head cross country coach at FHS, says his squad is
young but that he feels the ability and desire is there.

Heading the list of returning lettermen is Phillipsburg senior
John Mason. The holder of numerous school distance running marks,
he will be counted on to lead the Tiger charge to a fourth consecutive
CIC cross country crown.

An NAIA cross country All-American and NAIA track and
field All-American, Mason is the defending CIC individual champ and
finished second in the NAIA affair last season.

Backing Mason are lettermen Bruce Zamrzla, Salina junior;
Gerald Shelly, Ford sophomore; Neal Cleaves, Johnson senior; and
J. D. Glazier, Salina sophomore.

Kearney (Neb.) State College, a
rival of the Fort Hays State Tigers
since 1926, represents the opposi-
tion in this evening's football
game.

Kearney State College was
founded in 1905 as the Normal
School of the West, the second
teachers college in the state of Ne-
braska. For many years, it was
known as Kearney State Teachers
College, but the “teachers” was
dropped by Legislative act in 1963.

Enrollment in the largest of the
four state colleges this fall will be
more than 5,000. Kearney State
is growing rapidly, having only
1,800 students just 10 years ago.

The college offers four bache-
lor's degrees and a master of sci-
ence degree. All degree programs
are accredited by the North Cen-
tral Association and the National
Council for the Accreditation of
Teacher Education. More than
675 students received their degrees
from Kearney last year.

Growth is evident in other areas
as well. Since 1955 at least one
new building has been occupied
each year. Completed during the
decade have been Cushing Colise-
um, Calvin Ryan Library, W. E.
Bruner Science Hall, Nebraskan
food center, Otto C. Olsen Voca-
tional Arts, Student Union, and
eight residence halls.

Cushing Coliseum, completed in
1961, is one of the best equipped
buildings in the Midwest, It con-
tains classrooms, an indoor 220-
yard track, basketball courts, an
indoor olympic-size swimming pool,
offices, and locker space.

The head football coach at
Kearney State is Allen Zikmund, a
veteran of 13 years at the Nebras-
ka institution. Zikmund's career
record going into the 1967 season
is 89-20-1. His assistants are Bar-
ry Allen, Fred Gerhardt, Bob
Hauver, Les Livingston and Larry
Timmermans,

Charlie Foster has been athletic
director at Kearney State for 22
years. The sports information di-
rector for the Nebraska school is
Don Briggs. Kearney's colors are
royal blue and old gold and the
team nickname is “Antelopes.”
Zikmund's chargers operate from a
multiple-T offense system and the
Antelopes are members of the Ne-
braska College Conference.

larger 307-cubic-inch V8 standard on Chevrolet,
Chevelle and Chevy IT models for *68, And on
automatic transmission models, there's even a built-
in heater that warms air en route to the carburetor

The new GM exhaust emission control is standard.
